The Year I Lost Everything… And How I Found My Faith Again

bernard alvarez

This past year changed my life in ways I never could have imagined.

I watched my best friend die suddenly in front of me. Not long after, I walked away from a place I had devoted years of my life to because compassion was missing when I needed it most. Months later, my beautiful son Daniel passed away. During that time, some of the people I expected to stand beside me simply couldn’t. And by the end of the year, I also lost the position with the organization I helped build for over fourteen years.

Grief has a way of shaking everything—including our faith.

There were moments when the anxiety was overwhelming. My income slowed to a trickle, the future felt uncertain, and the constant stream of troubling headlines didn’t make it easier.

But something unexpected happened.

One simple mantra I used years ago came back to me, and it reminded me of a truth I had forgotten: we don’t actually lose our faith. Sometimes we just forget where it lives inside us.

In this video, I share what this past year has taught me about grief, resilience, and rediscovering faith when life feels impossibly heavy.

If you’re walking through your own dark season, I hope this conversation reminds you that the light is still there.

“Faith is not the absence of darkness. Faith is the quiet voice within us that says—keep walking, the light is still ahead.”
