This past Saturday, the Roanoke Diversity Center held a special event that touched my heart deeply. It was a moment to honor Linda Caldwell—Linny—and myself for our years of service to the Roanoke Valley LGBTQ+ community. Standing in that space, surrounded by so many who have shaped and nurtured this community, I felt the weight and warmth of shared history and collective hope. This celebration wasn’t just about recognition; it was about the enduring power of love, leadership, and unwavering service.
A Gathering Rooted in Connection
From the moment I stepped into the Center, I could feel the energy of community. This wasn’t just a ceremony; it was a coming together of people who have walked this path together—sometimes through shadow, often through light. The air was filled with gratitude, conversation, and laughter. The simple gesture of catering invited us to break bread, share stories, and connect in ways that went far beyond formalities.
Adding to the sense of history and continuity, leaders past and present were in attendance—including our Roanoke Mayor Joe Cobb, former Board President Elizabeth Parsons, current Board President Katie Lewis, former Executive Director James Vega, and fellow founding Board Member and Father of the House of Expression Garland Gravely. Seeing these faces reminded me that the work we do is part of a larger story, built on decades of dedication and love.

The Power of Service in the LGBTQ+ Community
Service is often spoken of in abstract terms, but here, it is tangible. It is the late nights spent organizing events, the countless conversations held in safe spaces, the advocacy that pushes against systemic barriers. Linda Caldwell and I have walked this road with intention and heart. Our service is a tapestry woven from moments of joy, struggle, and resilience.
I want to share with you what this service means on a personal level. It is about showing up when it feels hard, about holding space for those who feel unseen, and about building bridges where walls once stood. It is a commitment to love fiercely and lead with integrity. This is the essence of what we celebrate.
Reflections on Leadership and Legacy
Leadership in a community like ours is not about titles or accolades. It is about embodying the values we wish to see in the world. It is about listening deeply, acting courageously, and nurturing growth in others. Linda and I have learned that leadership is a sacred trust, one that requires humility and fierce dedication.
Our legacy is not just the programs we have created or the events we have hosted. It is the lives touched, the spirits lifted, and the community strengthened. Each act of service is a seed planted in fertile ground, destined to grow in ways we may never fully see.

How You Can Support and Celebrate Community Leaders
Honoring leaders like Linda and myself is a call to action for all of us. It invites you to consider how you can contribute to the ongoing work of building authentic community. Here are some practical ways to engage:
Show up: Attend local events, meetings, and gatherings. Your presence matters.
Volunteer: Offer your time and skills to organizations that support LGBTQ+ individuals.
Advocate: Use your voice to promote policies and practices that foster inclusion and equity.
Educate: Learn about the history and challenges of the LGBTQ+ community in your area.
Support financially: Donations help sustain vital programs and services.
By embracing these actions, you become part of a living legacy that honors those who came before and paves the way for those who will follow.
Embracing the Journey Forward
As I reflect on this honor, I am reminded that our work is never done. The path of service and leadership is ongoing, filled with new challenges and opportunities for growth. I am deeply grateful for the recognition, but even more so for the community that makes this journey meaningful.
Together, we continue to build something beautiful here with our online spiritual community, as well as in my beautiful Roanoke - a community rooted in love, resilience, and authentic connection. This event was a milestone, a moment to pause and appreciate, but also a spark to ignite the next chapter of our shared story.
Thank you for being part of this journey with me. Your support, your presence, and your commitment are the true gifts that sustain us all.
